Batman Park Kindergarten Spaces

Batman Park Kindergarten is housed in a wonderful solid brick building from the 1950s. We have two rooms and two yards — the North Room and South Room. Funded three and four year old kindergarten are held in both rooms. The building is owned by local government, the City of Darebin.

The general building provides an office and facilities for our Educators, Administration Assistant and the Committee of Management. The small kitchen allows simple cooking experiences with children. The large storeroom for resources and equipment is accessible from both rooms.

Darebin Council is very proactive in the maintenance and upgrade of the building. The council provided project management assistance with the kinder-funded installation of a 10kW solar power system in 2016, which reduces our electricity costs and our environmental impact.

Learning environments

The North and South rooms boast timber and pre-loved furniture, a huge selection of wooden blocks and an abundance of rich, stimulating resources. Both rooms feature permanent learning areas, including a dedicated art and craft space brimming with mostly recycled materials, a cosy nook for reading books and a place to practice and master puzzles. Dramatic play spaces encourage cooperative play, social connections, pretending and make believe. Loose parts and re-purposed props encourage open-ended play and creativity. The rooms are heated in winter and air-conditioned in summer for comfort.

The indoor learning spaces directly adjoin the outdoors, allowing a flow of play between the two. The yards feature digging patches, sandpits and rainwater tanks, accessible to children for play and watering the garden. Vegie and flower beds are maintained by Educators, children and our maintenance volunteers. Worm farms and composts are the perfect place for organic waste and, in turn, nourish our gardens. Large verandas and shade sails provide shade and weather protection throughout the year.
